Mýrdalsjökull is located approximately 1493 metres above sea level and covers an area of 595 km². Glacier runs are typical for Mýrdalsjökull. When these occur, large amounts of ice, water and volcanic rock flood the foreland. The cause of the glacier floods is a volcano underneath the glacier cap. The volcano
is active every 40-80 years. 16 eruptions have been documented since the settlement of Iceland. The last clearly documented eruption took place in 1918 and resulted to a tremendous glacier run which reached up to 200.000 m³/s. It is assumed, though, that eruptions underneath the ice cap also took place in 1955 and 2000.
Compared with its many other glacier tongues, Sólheimajökull is the longest and narrowest.
